I believe children remember and believe everything their parents tell them. My first grade student came into class one morning with a smile on his face. He immediately began to show me and the class the gold arrowhead necklace he was wearing around his neck. He had found this necklace at his house the evening before. The necklace was a yellow orange chain with a matching gold colored arrowhead. It looked as if it smelled like the dirty smell of old jewelry. This smell is a unclassifiable smell that cheap jewelry has when a person has had it for too long. Does your body produce that disgusting smell or is it just the smell of jewerly that should be thrown away? This little bushy blonde haired boy who needed a haircut more than he needed a gold arrowhead necklace continued to touch and play with the possibly fowl smelling necklace throughout the day. He was so proud of this necklace. My first guess was that he felt a connection with Rock Hill Redmen (Indians) through that arrowhead necklace. But the real connection to the arrowhead necklace came out after recess. The little boy come in the classroom with a red face, slicked down hair from sweat, and a huge smile on his face. “Mrs. Carpenter my dad was right about this necklace, it is a lucky necklace. Three girls chased me then entire recess and I think two of them want to date me. I am never taking this necklace off again.” Through this first graders necklace I came to the realization that your kids truly believe all of the lucky necklace advice that you give them. I can’t wait to have kids so they will believe all of my lucky necklace advice.

Dustee,

It is amazing what students learn and what they believe. I love your story about the necklace. I am now wondering if I have a lucky object someplace. I better start looking! :-)

I loved your discription of the boy with the necklace. Does he still wear it?

What a powerful word picture of the influence of parents. I enjoy reading your piece.

No he doesn't wear this necklace now. The lucky arrowhead necklace obsession only lasted about a week.
